Online Collaboration Tools
Notes
Activity - Why?
- Social Exercise - whould you have spoken to the person next to you?
- Exposure to new / different perspectives
- Defending your ideas
- Quote about social computing "The whole is greater than the sum of the parts" (eg MySpace)
Issues
- Excitement over cooperative learning but ...
- Logistics (how could I get the students together - class time? - out of class is difficult esp for students w/o transport.)
- Watch as one student writes and the others "wait" (or as in MSIS) pass documents around via email.
- Could not tell who was doing what -
- More Logitics (in a multi class/section project how do you maintain a central place for putting all of the information?)
- Process - Grading was based on the deliverable but the Focus should have been on the process (The journey is more important than the destignation)
- My Logistics (How do I keep track of what is going on in each of the groups... in class I could walk over and listen in but what about out of class?)
Goals & Agenda
- Five case studies that examine different "issues" that have pleged colloration projects
Case #1 - My Bill of Rights
- writeboard - central location for brainstorming
- writeboard - versions
- writeboard - comments
- writeboard - focus on content, not format
Case #2 - May I borrow your notes?
- wiki - central location for multiple groups all working on a larger project
- wiki - provides an organizational structure familiar with our students (links to pages)
- wiki - versioning with student particiation __watch for more stats from PBWiki?__
- wiki - easy to use but also capable of advanced publication
Case #3 - My grandmother is the meanest...
- writely - familiar interface - word processing
- writely - simultaneous editing
- writely - versioning
- writely - compare versions to see changes
Case #4 - Sleep
- zoho - familiar / intuitive interface
- zoho - simultaneos editing
- zoho - versioning
- zoho - central location for data gathering
- zoho - export for further / distict processing
Case #5 - My Dog Ate It
- rss - All of these provide a RSS feed (except Zoho?) so you can "watch" as your students work
- tags - Create centralized location for students work *TAGS* (url = del.icio.us, photos = flickr, videos = youtube)
- portal - Create a single gateway/portal for seeing what is new and accessing student work
Issues that Remain
- Technology - students are smart and are constantly finding ways of getting around the rules. Mix w/ a flare for destruction? E.G. logging in under someone else's username/password and will delete/alter content.
- How to collaborate - these tools help, but you will still need to teach kids to use these tools to effectively colloborate
- Ruberic - the importance of a clearly defined set of expectations cannot be understated.
- Student Attitudes what to do with a "bad egg" in a group? Creative solutions - groups draft mission statements and set of expectations for each member.
Types of collaboration
- Be aware of the multitude of opportunities for collaboration
- Students w/ Students
- Students w/ Teacher
- Students w/ World
